About Jo

Creating & caring for a garden is one of life’s great pleasures and I started my business because I want to help as many people as I can  experience the profound joy, connection and satisfaction that comes from gardening. Gardens are amazing, powerful places that bring about improved well-being through self-expression and creativity.

My gardens have inspired me to cook, bake and make chocolate using flowers, write poetry and make heartfelt gifts for my friends. They continue to be an integral part of my well-being, helping me to relax, rest, feel nurtured and nourished.

I believe that gardening is an act of love – and that what it’s all about really.

This is what people tell me when we talk about their gardens..

I want a safe, sanctuary space but I don’t know where to start.

I want to grow healthy, organic fruit and veg but I feel overwhelmed by all the information and decisions.

I want to be surrounded by beauty but I’m rubbish at gardening and kill all my plants.

I know my garden needs major changes but I can’t work it out and I’m afraid I’ll get it all wrong and waste my money.

It would be so much easier and much more fun if I had someone to work with me in the garden.  I don’t want to do it all on my own.

I say you can do this and together we can work it out.

Hello, I’m Jo.

I’m a garden consultant and designer who transforms lives by creating beautiful, joyful gardens.

I use my knowledge and experience as a gardener and designer to help you move from a state of overwhelm and stuckness to a place of calm and clarity so that together we can create a garden that you love.

In addition, I offer one – to – one guidance and support and I also run workshops and courses so that once you’ve made your garden you can tend it with love so that it continues to be a source of inspiration and joy.

I put connection, love and compassion at the heart of what I offer you – and this produces a very distinctive and effective service that gets the results you want.

You see, I offer much more than a ‘done for you’ consultation and design because I know how important it is for you to create the garden yourself.  It isn’t just about having a garden – it’s about being in the garden, immersed in the energy of it, connecting with yourself and nature and expressing yourself creatively.

I understand how important this process of creation is to you and how frustrating not being able to bring your vision into being is.  I know that it can be really hard to get started on transforming your garden because once upon a time that was also my reality…..

A Bit of My Story

When I bought my first house I dreamed of growing a beautiful organic garden filled with gorgeous veg, fruit and flowers.

It didn’t happen.

I was overwhelmed by the enormity of the task and I lacked knowledge, time and money. I didn’t know where to start and my demanding schedule meant that I didn’t have the time to find out.

The sight of my untended field made me feel frustrated and a failure.  I had headaches and face pain daily; something gnawed at me; something was missing.  Each time I looked at my field I felt wounded. My heart sank as I realised I was never going to create the garden I wanted.

Eventually, it all changed.  I left my job, moved house and acquired my first garden. It was a tiny little thing – but at last I had something manageable where I could learn. I was like a sponge; soaking up all the information I could find.

Finally, I grew a garden and my life changed for ever.

A few years later I became a professional gardener.  The gnawing stopped and the headaches and face pain left me for good.  As I connected with the life in the garden, I connected with myself. Through gardening, I was able to express my deep love of nature, wildlife and flowers and I was surrounded by beauty and the rhythm of life. As I connected, I relaxed and healed. Through gardening, I was able to live the grounded, creative life I yearned for.

I know that you can experience something similar. Your garden can be a magical place that enables you to tap into your  creative energy that’s waiting to surface and find expression.

Jo’s Bio

I was always destined to be a garden whisperer but there were a few detours on the way!  Each one has given me knowledge and skills that I bring to my work now.  If I had simply gone to horticultural college at the age of 18 I wouldn’t be offering the kind of service I offer now – that’s for sure!

My horticultural training began at the age of 40 after I left my work in the University sector.  (I had been a researcher, then a lecturer).

I now have almost twenty years experience as a head gardener, garden consultant and trainer and I’ve helped many women bring their garden dreams to life through a combination of advice and guidance, design drawings and planting plans and my own version of ‘companion planting’ where I garden beside you, teaching, encouraging and making sure we have a good time.

I’ve also inspired many people to start gardening or to become more creative in their garden via my workshops and courses.  I’ve worked with community organisations, an Equine Assisted Therapy Centre, Housing Associations and Town Councils to bring gardening with love to a wider audience and transform the lives of people living in areas of economic disadvantage.  You can find out more about my workshops and courses on my sister website: Really Useful Gardens.

My formal qualifications include a Higher Diploma in Garden Design,  RHS Qualifications in Horticulture and an HNC in Professional Organic Gardening and I have a Certificate in Teaching Adults as well as my experience as a lecturer and tutor all those years ago.

I’m currently working toward a Practitioner Diploma in Flower and Vibrational Essences which is due to complete in November 2019. This involves connecting with flowers, land, and the environment at a very deep energetic level and I know this can only enhance my work as a garden whisperer.

The  most important thing I’ve learned is that gardening is an expression of LOVE.  When we tend our plants, care for the soil and so on, we connect with the love in our hearts; giving love and receiving it.  There is nothing more powerful, nothing more important and I am so grateful and blessed to be able to help women make this connection and to transform their lives through gardening with love.

Erica’s Story

Jo came to visit for two days.  Before she came myself and my husband were overwhelmed: enthusiastic and eager to get going on our new garden but we didn’t know where to start. This is our first real garden and we have a lot to learn.  After the two days we have so much more confidence and inspiration. Jo introduced us to all our plants, explained how to care for them and gave us the belief we can do wonderful things without being over ambitious. In the first week after Jo’s visit we mended fences, cleared paths, pruned bushes and visited the garden centre without becoming overwhelmed.  Previously, I have come away frustrated and confused. We have two initial projects that are now in our soul – a cottage garden flower border and herb garden in pots on the patio. Small step to begin with.  Loving our garden with lots of tea breaks (of the herbal kind). Love you Jo! Thanks so much!
